Waller, Jesse
Pitt Co.
Year 1762
Jacob received a grant of 100 acres of land in Pitt Co.,NC. The warrant is dated 10 Dec 1770, surveyed 8 Nov 1771,and patented 14 May 1772. Several facts be drawn from this; first, that he was of legal age, 21 years, or he could not have received a grant of land in his own name; second, that he was married, for his grant was for 100 acres, fifty acres for each person in the household; third, that would make his birthdate ca 1749.
Jacob was a member of the Masonic fraternity and therein rises a tale, which may or may not be true. In order to attend lodge meetings, it was necessary for him to cross a river. Sarah had to accompany him on the trip over, return home then go back to bring Jacob home. It seems that after business had been attended to, the brethren would serve refreshments consisting of hard cider. So the tale goes that Sarah became tired of this and is supposed to have pushed him into the river where he drowned. The drowning is correct as there is documentary proof of that. There is no record of Sarah having been brought before the court for trial (Compiler's note: The Masonic fraternity does not condone the use of alcoholic beverages.)
Jacob furnished supplies of some nature to the Continental Army and was paid by the State of North Carolina the amount of three pounds, 20 shillings, and six pence. He is classified as a Patriot for this. This makes any of his descendants eligible to apply for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution or the Sons of the American Revolution. (Compiler's note: It will take more work than just quote the above to obtain membership).
