Colonel George Waller (1734-1814) is one of our more interesting Wallers. He was born in Prince William County, VA, son of George Waller and Elizabeth Allen. When George was four the family moved to Springhill, Stafford County VA where they settled on part of the old Waller-Masters grant of 1669.

George found his wife in near-by Spotsylvania County, where in December, 1760, he married Anne Winston Carr, daughter of Captain William Carr and his wife Elizabeth Winston. Of illustrious family and connection, Anne was a second cousin of Patrick Henry, the Revolutionary War hero.

It is probable George and Anne first established a home in Spotsylvania County, possibly on land belonging to the Carr family. Deeds were witnessed in that county in 1769 by George, Anne, and her father.

By September 27, 1775 the young couple were in Pittsylvania County Virginia, where a court nominated George to be an Ensign in the Militia. Pittsylvania County, established in 1766 was only nine years old at this time. Henry County was not cut from Pittsylvania County until 1776.

Henry County, (named for Patrick Henry) at that time a wild and rugged frontier, is located high on the Piedmont Plateau at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The new County held it’s first court on April 20, 1778. George was one of the four Justices seated. In October 1780 he was appointed Tax Commissioner.

Virginia had had little part in the Revolutionary War in it’s early northern stages, but after the fall of Charleston, South Carolina, to the British on April 12, 1780, General Cornwallis began a devastating march across the Carolinas. It was to strengthen the American forces under General Green in North Carolina that George Waller, then holding the rank of Major of Militia, was ordered to march twenty-one companies of Militia to Hillsborough, North Carolina to join General Adam Stevens.

They engaged the English at the Battle of Guilford Court House. The efforts against Cornwallis were not very spectacular but they did elbow him back to the coast and into the trap General Washington had prepared on Yorktown peninsula. The English surrendered on October 19, 1781. George Waller and the troops under his command were with Washington during the siege of Yorktown and at the surrender. George was recommended for a commission as Colonel of Militia in March, 1782, and was commissioned soon thereafter.
